Why usability studies are so important

As designers, we are itching to do the design. That’s our métier.
But…
We need to do the research with usability studies.
Usability studies can be conducted in many ways. Moderated or un-moderated, in the studio or out in the field, or by interviewing or observing. Usability studies ought to produce a bolus of research data.
Why and what we are iterating on our design means that we need to take time out and dedicate resources to conduct usability studies, from start to finish.
Use this 5-step method to successfully lead a usability study that leads to the right design iteration.
1: How to do a usability study
Find at least five to seven study participants. If we have a large(r) research budget and an extensive team, we can invite more participants. For big companies, the sky’s the limit. But for our purposes, we’ll keep it in a smaller context.
