Take the long-term view on being the writer-creator on Medium
Keep your sails steady
--
As captain of your own creative boat, you’ll have to make many macro-decisions before you launch your great adventure across the content-filled ocean.
And while on your sea-faring journey, each day will bring varying winds and weather conditions. Numerous creative micro-decisions will need to follow your macro-decisions.
Those decisions, macro and micro, will manifest in your journey hundreds of times, sometimes dynamically and visibly, other times, gently and invisibly.
Be the captain of your own ship
As you launch your boat to sail this ocean, you will need a destination. This is to become your mainsail, your macro-decision. You might ask yourself: “I’m I to set sail to go north, to discover the great expanse of icy plains and snow-covered peaks? Or, I’m I to sail south, where sandy beaches laced with palm trees and turquoise waters are awaiting me?”
Similarly, position yourself for your story telling: “Am I to write fiction, or am I a journalist describing the stars which guide me on my journey? Am I to poetize about my skills as a sailer, or am I to feature my mechanical knowledge of my ship’s engine?”
Make your answers to these questions your macro-decision. They will determine your course for a long time to come.
You micro-decisions will complement your macro. They will create an even stronger flow. Each day, to fulfill your own great narrative, your environment will ask you to make many micro-decisions. Eccentric new characters will fill your pages, plot revisions will follow, new chapters will appear, or pages will disappear.
No matter which destination you choose, chart your course decisively. Your writing journey is your boat, your trusted foundation for the months and years ahead.
