Painting and sketching while traveling along the Maine coast

My greatest thrills when wanderlust strikes

Traveling has always been my excuse to pack an entire bag filled with art supplies, a big sketch book, and several smaller ones. This summer, it’s no different. Pencils, brushes, tubes of paints, erasers, sharpeners all fill my bag.

Traveling for me is not so much about sightseeing top destinations, but rather, it’s about explorative hikes to edges. Edges of water, edges of rock, edges of gardens, edges at the edge of the world where mesmerizingly cinematic views open up and take my breath away.

Maine is such a place.

Maine is awe-inspiring. The morning, afternoon, and evening lights are ever-rotating filters on a stage illuminated by an invisible hand.

Atlantic ocean waves crash against cliffs and rocks, sculpting bizzare stone formations. High winds, salty swells, pounding rains, and a hot summer sun all beat down on nature that in turn responds with resilience and endurance. Tiny animals thrive in untouched coves and scraggy nooks while bigger fish and mammals splash around in bays.

Thousands of coves, inlets, marshes, islands, peninsulas, mountain ranges, and the vast ocean in between create stunning panoramas.
