Of course, SVGs or JSONs files are absolutely preferable, if not actually mandatory for web building. But when writing a story on a social blog, I love seeing a GIF animation to lighten up the text. And Medium, for instance, only supports jpgs, pngs, or gifs as running image files.
Granted, loading time might be horrible, and GIFs don't support extensive palettes or images.
But I still love them.

APNG files are supported by some web browsers, such as Firefox and Safari, but not by all of them. As a result, many websites still use the GIF format for animated images to ensure compatibility with all web browsers.
