What exactly is a mind-map?

A mind-map is a sketch of a diagram that helps to visually structure ideas.

A mind-map is drawn from a central idea, which is at the center of the diagram. From there, related and free-associative ideas are added, radiating from and connected to the center like branches of a tree. Each branch represents a distinct sub-idea.

Colors, images, or symbols can be used to enhance the visual appeal and clarity of the mind-map. Mind-maps can be created by hand, using pen and paper, or by using software tools designed for creating mind-maps, or, like in these example, and an illustrative fashion.

It is a tool for brainstorming and ideation. Using mind-mapping encourages the designer to fluidly connect thoughts in a free-associative way.[1]
