‘Blobby’ design and where it lives

Discovering the amorphic shapes that rule the design world

--

Blobby design is all around us. Although we are trained to see the world mathematically in grids dominated by horizontal and vertical lines, there is a profusion of curvy, non-angular structures all around us.

In fact, the idea of a blob, an organic shape, is a natural design closer to our own human anatomy.

A blob can look like this

A blob shape is a curvilinear, organic shape that can be very simple or have complex folds.

A blob is an amoeba-shaped form. It can have the shape of an egg or the many undulations of a liquid splash.

From egg shape to drop splash shape, these are all blob shapes.

One of the most famous blob shape in toy design might just be the following:

The ubiquitous rubber duck shape is perhaps the most recognizable around the world (other than the egg).
