Hashtags are identifiers of a particular topic, preceded by the “#” symbol. Social platform users can stay informed on a topic by following a hashtag. Hashtags can be simple or long strings of words, depending on the author’s choice. Social media content depends on the hashtag feature to establish relevance and topicality.

For this story, I’m following Instagram (IG) trends. Similar analyses could be drawn for other social media sites.

Let’s take a look at the top two most popular hashtags on IG, based on numbers of posts

№1 # on IG:

#love

1.7 billion posts

#love unites a global community of families, dreamers, naturalists, adventurers and inventors of all gender, ages and races. It is a universal theme affecting every single sentient person. The imagery covers many different styles and settings. Over one and a half billion creators world-wide contribute to #love.

№2 # on IG:

#instagood
